Health and Physical Education
The 18 Health and Physical Education Standards included in this subsection were devised from the National Association for Sports and Physical Education (NASPE) standards. Additionally, The National Health Education Standards 2007, were also incorporated in the knowledge, skills, attitudes and disposition. Note, the letters, P.E are used to represent the Physical Education Standards in this subsection.
PE: 1 Demonstrates competency in fundamental movement patterns and proficiency in a few specialized movement forms
PE: 2 Apply movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills
PE: 3 Exhibits a health enhancing, physically-active lifestyle that improves health and provides opportunities for enjoyment and challenge
PE: 4 Describe and select physical activities that provide opportunities for enjoyment and challenge
PE: 5 Understands safety practices associated with physical activity and space
PE: 6 Explain appropriate water safety rules such as never swim alone, never run around pools, look before you jump, enter feet first, and know the role of the lifeguard
PE: 7 Understand appropriate reactions during emergencies in physical activities.
PE: 8 Demonstrate understanding of basic components such as strategies and rules of structured physical activities including, but not limited to, games, sports, dance, and gymnastics
PE: 9 Identify positive self-management and social skills needed to work independently and with others in physical activity settings
PE: 10 Demonstrates competency in fundamental movement patterns and proficiency in a few specialized movement forms
PE: 11 Demonstrate proper foot patterns in hopping, jumping, skipping, leaping, galloping, and Sliding
PE: 12 Acquire the knowledge and skills for movement that provide the foundation for enjoyment, continued social development through physical activity, and access to a physically-active lifestyle
PE: 13 Understand and apply physiological and biomechanical principles to improve health related fitness
PE: 14 Develop positive self-management and social skills needed to work independently and with others
PE: 15 Demonstrates competency in two or more outdoor education activities such as backpacking, boating, camping, hiking, orienteering, water sports, or water safety certification
PE: 16 Exhibits a physically-active lifestyle that improves health and provides opportunities for enjoyment and challenge through team sports
PE: 17 Exhibit a level of competency in two or more aerobic activities that may include aerobic dance, aqua aerobics, cycling, jogging, power walking, recreational dance, and step aerobics
PE: 18 Analyze and evaluate personal fitness status in terms of cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and body composition
Knowledge
1. Demonstrate clear contrasts between slow and fast movement when traveling
2. Demonstrate non- locomotor (axial) movements such as bend and stretch
3. Knows the benefits from being involved in daily physical activity and factors that affect physical performance
4. Recognize and resolve conflicts during physical activity
5. Explain how over training may contribute to negative health problems such as bulimia and anorexia
6. Analyze the relationship between sound nutritional practices and physical activity
7. Explain myths associated with physical activity and nutritional practices
8. Analyze methods of weight control such as diet, exercise
9. Identify changeable risk factors such as inactivity, smoking, nutrition, and stress that affect physical activity and health
10. Identify and apply the health-related fitness principles to outdoor activities
11. Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of adventure/outdoor education activities and their effects on a personal fitness program
12. Explain and follow safety procedures during adventure/outdoor education activities
13. List and describe safety equipment used in outdoor activities
14. Design safe and appropriate practices/procedures to improve skill in an activity
15. Describe appropriate practices and procedures to improve skill and strategy in an activity
16. Analyze and compare health and fitness benefits derived from participating in selected aerobic activities
17. Develop and participate in a personal fitness program that has the potential to provide identified goals
18. Explain the effects of substance abuse on personal health and performance in physical activity
19. Evaluate risks and safety factors that may affect aerobic activity preferences throughout the life span
20. Identify and apply rules and procedures that are designed for safe participation
21. Explain why and how a rule provides safe practices in participation
22. Describe equipment and practices that decrease the likelihood of injury such as proper footwear
Skills
1. Move in different ways in a large group without bumping into others or falling
2. Walk forward and sideways the length of a beam without falling
3. Maintain balance while bearing weight on a variety of body parts
4. Demonstrate a variety of relationships such as under, over, behind, next to, through, right, left, up, down, forward, backward, and in front of
5. Demonstrate movement forms of various body parts such as head flexion, extension, and rotation
6. Use appropriate technology tools to evaluate, monitor, and improve physical development
7. Assess personal skills and set realistic goals for improvement
Attitudes and Disposition
1. Establish realistic yet challenging health-related fitness goals
2. Respond to challenges, successes, and failures in physical activities in socially appropriate ways
3. Accept successes and performance limitations of self and others, exhibit appropriate behavior/responses, and recognize that improvement is possible with appropriate practice
4. Anticipate potentially dangerous consequences of participating in selected aerobic Activities
