Several educational organizations such as the National Research Council (2007)6 and Committee for Economic Development (2006) assert that global education affords students the opportunity to acquire a broad range of conceptual skills and competencies such as programs in intercultural competencies, integration among and within a range of disciplines, strong academics, critical thinking, reasoning, and technological skills. Based on the premise that learning is a dynamic and interactive process governed by relevant instructional practices under the auspices of professional teachers, the profile of students enrolled in the Belize High School is aligned to the expectations described in the 21st century workforce commission. Therefore, it is envisioned that students will demonstrate mastery of:
1. Digital Age Literacy - this includes acquiring the skills to write persuasively, think and reason logically, and solve complex problems in mathematics, science and all core disciplines.
2. Inventing Thinking - embedded in this concept is students’ ability to identify and react to changing conditions. That is, students will become self directed learners and innovatively solve problems.
3. Visual and Information Literacy - students will become users of modern technology such as video data, advanced use of digital cameras, graphic packages, streaming videos, and use visual imagery to communicate ideas. Additionally, students will experience a more intuitive and highly customized learning experience including the use of educational white boards, mini-notebooks and other internet appliances with wireless internet connectivity and relevant educational software.
4. Social and Personal Skills - students will adapt to rapid changes and master complex tasks.
5. Interactive communication - students will communicate using technology such as synchronous and asynchronous communication devices and group interactions in virtual learning spaces.
6. Higher Order Thinking and Reasoning - across all subject areas, students will demonstrate higher order thinking, make decisions, solve problems, and plan, design and assess solutions.
7. Development of Intellectual skills - this includes mastery of core disciplines and the ability to apply them effectively within their milieu.
8. Artistic Skills - students will become exposed to the fine arts including, visual and performing arts (music, drama, dance, painting, photography, etc) and physical education.
9. Social Functionality - students will acquire the knowledge and skills to succeed as effective citizens, workers and leaders in the 21st century.
10. Cultural Literacy and Global Awareness - students will become sensitized to the need for interaction and partnership with persons from different cultures and regions of the world.
11. High Quality Results with real world application - students will acquire the skills to excel in the following: Caribbean Secondary Education of Certificate (CSEC), Scholastic Aptitude Test/Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT), and other relevant examinations.
